Questions and answers

What does PGI mean on an ensaïmada?

It is an EU protected geographical indication, granted by Commission Regulation 297/2004 of 19 February 2004; the pastry must be made in Mallorca to approved rules. Some sources give the year 2003, but EU law says 2004.

Where can I try an ensaïmada in Palma?

In the bakeries and cafés of Palma's old town; look for a label with the PGI logo. The choice of a particular bakery is a matter of preference, as we do not recommend brands.

Is an ensaïmada a good souvenir to take home?

Yes, many bakeries pack it in characteristic round boxes; buy one with the PGI label and check how many days it stays fresh.
