Questions and answers

What does IGP mean on sobrassada?

It is a protected geographical indication: sobrassada must be made in Mallorca to the recipe set out in the rules. The Porc Negre version additionally guarantees meat from black pigs born and raised on the island.

How much IGP sobrassada is sold each year?

In 2025, 5.6 million units and over 2 million kg, of which 116,543 kg (6%) was porc negre; the IGP has 15 companies and 24 farms.

Does sobrassada always come from Mallorcan pigs?

No. According to an article from 2020 about 70% of the product was made from the meat of pigs from outside the island; only versions labelled porc negre guarantee meat of the black breed from Mallorca.

Can I take sobrassada home with me?

The rules for cured meats depend on the destination country and EU regulations; check the limit in your own country and pack the product in its original packaging with the label.
